scrolling across desktop??

Hi,
 
i upgraded a redhat7 server installation and added up X-server.
Now the X starts up ok but i am unable to pan across the desktop screens
(there would be four i guess).
Also it doesnt shows up any icons on the desktop as any workstation would
show by default. (the red errata & others).
 
While upgrading i could not locate X-contrib. What role does that play & is
it essential??
