for installing fonts you have to check what kind of server you are running.

xfs, xfstt and there are libraries that translate ttf to type1 or something
these tend to depend on dists as well as personal choice. I like using true type fonts which give high quality a least on my system. The Holy grail for fonts would netscape showing www.altavista.com.

I run xfstt and my fonts are in directory /usr/share/fonts and /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts
check them out
