mysql_install_db is not working !

Hi all,
 I tried installing from the source.I gunzipped it and untarred it.It
created all the directories [scripts,lib,bin....]. But I am unable to do
mysql_install_db [which is in scripts directory].It is in
mysql_install_db.sh file.And make all,sh,bash,install, doesnt work.Anyone
here can help me in this?

[ps:safe_mysqld is also safe_mysqld.sh in bin directory.Linux is redhat
linux 6.0 and mysql is mysql-3.22.32 ]
