regarding feeble sound output from soundcard

Hai luggies,
At last i got driver for my sound card(i810 ChipSet) from opensound.org.But 
the sound output from the device is very feeble.Any tweak to increase the 
audiblity.I have tried the option -g with values 10,100,1000 to mpg123 no 
improvement in audiblity.What is the difference between /dev/dsp and 
/dev/audio?
