Serial Port Checking....

i have a device (controller) that works at 4800bauds to be connected to the serial port. 
using linuxconf there is no option to do this(only modem configuration is possible).
how do i configure the serial port to 4800 bauds? Also i want to check if the serial port is working fine is there any aimple way to do this?
