how to create a new filesystem in free space avl in linux

Hi

I have an intel based system with 2gb hdd, i've installed linux very 
recently now i would like add another file system (i.e) user defined file 
system to or to install a s/w on that f/s. how to get the free block devie 
address from linux to create new f/s.
